Belfast Wheel - Chinese Welfare Association and Mornington Community Group

The Chinese Welfare Association then joined with the Mornington Community Group in a cross community project with artist Clare Mc Comish and Joanne Denton. They wanted to work with different materials so we decided to work with wood, ceramics and glass. The group designed wooden templates depicting natural forms then created organic shaped ceramic relief sculptures that adhered to the wood. Before this was complete coloured glass was fused to the ceramic forms and fired to create a glistening twinkle that contrasted with the white unglazed porcelain. The wooden templates were painted dark colours to highlight the white clay. This resulted in a dramatic finish and two pieces of work that link together but can be installed separately in their respective centres.

The group enjoyed working together and mixing with each other’s culture.

‘Mornington ladies were made to feel very welcome even though there was a language barrier we all had fun’

Fiona Campbell, Chairperson Mornington Community Group

All the group's feedback was positive there was good support from the community organisations who we partnered with.  We endeavoured to offer a wide range of art mediums that could be used within the public realm within a small budget. We listened to the groups carefully through the initial consultations and tried to place the best artist with each group.
