Masque
New Belfast's Carnival & Dramatic Arts project
Masque is New Belfast’s carnival arts project which offers workshops in a variety of performance related activities such as dance, drama, costume and mask design, set and prop building, and carnival float dressing. Groups can use the project to explore their personal and community identities, and issues that are of importance to them.
Participating groups choose the level they want to work at; for example, projects may take the form of a series of taster sessions as part of a summer scheme, or on a larger scale, the design and dressing of floats for a community carnival.
A final performance may not always be the end point to a workshop programme, often participants prefer to exhibit documentation of the project as it evolves, then use this as a starting point for further developing their interest in a particular art form.
Masque is the most sociable of New Belfast’s programmes! We have worked with community carnivals and arts festivals across Northern Ireland and beyond.
A wide variety of groups have taken part in our programmes, with participants from differing religious and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and of various abilities, from the ages of 6 to 66. We have also undertaken work specifically with groups with disabilities through the Side by Side project, bringing them alongside able bodied groups with great success.
